Are You Sleeping too Much? Find out the Risks of Oversleeping

Sleep has a critical role in our physical and psychological processes, and having a good sleep is necessary for survival. However, sleeping too much or oversleeping is not the answer for it.

The amount of sleep that people need is different on every person depending on their age and their activity level as well as their lifestyle habits. According to Adrian Owen, a cognitive neuroscience professor at the University of Western Ontario, people who tend to sleep over the recommended time or oversleeping is likely caused by a form of grogginess called sleep inertia,which depends on the state of the sleep cycle that you’re in when you wake up. This condition can interrupt your decision-making process throughout the day, including some simple unnecessary choices, and physically it also can cause you some more risks.
  1. Weight gain
Although sleeping is also an activity that takes a lot of calories, a study showed that sleeping too much is also the reason on weight gain. Those who sleeps 10+ hours a day have 21% bigger chance of becoming obese than those who sleeps for 7-8 hours a day.
  1. Back pain
Lying down for hours could cause your muscles to become more stiff and increase pain.
  1. Premature aging
This does not effect only on your skin but also in your ability to perform basic daily tasks as it may increase the risk of developing mental degenerative disorders.
  1. Heart disease and diabetes
Oversleeping can increase your risk for developing heart disease because it increases your blood sugar faster and cause you to gain weight which can eventually introduce you with heart disease.
  1. Decrease fertility
A study of Korean women who are undergoing in-vitro fertilization therapy found that women who slept 7-8 hours had the best chances of conceiving, and vice versa for those who oversleeping.
