Unexpectedly, even by the creator itself – contemporary painting Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) was sold at Christie’s recently at a whooping price of 1.3 T, setting the record as world’s most expensive painting!
The England-native painter David Hockney was shocked to learn that his artwork, which he had sold at a low price the year 1972, now became a primadona among collector as the world’s most expensive painting! As comparison, before that sensational auction, Hockney sold the piece at only USD 18.000.
He remembered that right after production, the Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) painting was sold quickly. Years after years, it was passed around one collector to others, and the price was keep on rising. Only six months later, it’s already reached USD 50.000.
Hockney was inspired by two photographs juxtaposed on his home’s walls. One of it shows a person looking down while the other is swimming. He merged both concept into Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures), which took months to finish. The pool on the picture belongs to English movie director Tony Richardson. To study the figure, he took hundreds of photographs of two men, but one of them got involved in an accident.
What makes this painting special is mental turbulence behind it – if you’re curious, the creation of Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) is immortalized on 1974’s biopic movie, A Bigger Splash; or you can also learn about it by reading David Hockney by David Hockney: My Early Years.
