Balancing Marathon and Traveling with Kenes Andari

Not only well known as an actress and a model, Kenes Andari is also a traveler and a marathoner.

In 2011, she also acted as the co-director for Catatan (Harian) Si Boy. Born by the name of Asmara Siswandari, Kenes used to run for her school during her elementary days. Competing in a few sprinting competitions, she explained that getting back to running is like doing a fight with herself. Never once that it occurred to her that someone like her, who has no professional experience whatsoever and only through an intensive practice, that she could reach the finals without any injuries.

So you’ve been doing marathon since elementary school?
“I was originally a sprinter when I was young, I often competed in some races between elementary schools and I loved running since then. When I entered junior high, I started playing basketball and eventually quit sprinting. During my high school years in 2013, marathon became a trend and that was when I decided to run again. Then my sister and I joined a running club where I met my current coach and began to train under a schedule. Through the club, I became more engaged with tracking, fellow runners would motivate each other to push ourselves for the marathon. I aim to complete the 6 world marathon competitions, I’ve completed four already: Tokyo, Berlin, New York, and London. Got two more to go: Chicago and Boston.”
How do you balance your sprinting session to personal life, since it requires a lot of training.

“I’m not an ambitious woman, I like to do things in balance. I don’t want to sacrifice my time solely for marathon, because at the end of the day, the reason I’m doing it because I enjoy it. So in between, I like to spend my time to hang out with my friends, I also travel with my husband Winky at least once a year, so I do many things. I take my running routine the same way how I do the work out, I do it because I like it and it’s good for me. I run two to three times a week, but I could push it to four times a week or more when I’m preparing a marathon. I also do yoga in between and I find it very good for my body as it balances my body and my soul.”

You mentioned to travel once a year, what’s your tips for a backpacker out there?
“I’d like to go to places I’ve never been before, so my tips would be to research more about the places you’re going to visit, including the attractions. Plan it on an itinerary. I prefer to prepare all the tickets before my leaving, the tickets for trains, for the festivals, or even for the museums. And if you like to visit as many places as you want, then I’d like to recommend solo traveling. Winky and I love to plan our own trip, simply to manage our time better, visiting any places that we want. Another important note is to prepare your credit card for urgent needs, it’s better to be ready and sorry.”
