Detalks Vol. 2 by PPIA RMIT: Motivating Youngsters to Succeed

Millennials are often referred to as “Generation Me”. However, there are still a lot of Indonesia’s youngsters who have a mindset that it’s too early to worry about their future while it’s actually very important to have career thoughts ahead for themselves. Melihat ini, PPIA (Perhimpunan Pelajar Indonesia di Australia) dari Universitas RMIT, memutuskan untuk take action by creating a talk show event, which is Detalks vol.

PPIA, or Indonesian Students Association, in RMIT thrives to be an intimate yet open student organization.

As we’ve heard, PPIA Victoria terkenal dengan event-eventnya. What makes PPIA RMIT different from other PPIA in other Universities?

Untuk PPIA RMIT sendiri, I would say specifically untuk Detalks, we have a way to support our students to step up from their student life in Uni to their work life. It’s more about supporting each other.

Felicia: “Karena aku dari University of Melbourne, PPIA di kita lebih mengekspos Indonesian Film Festival as our main external events, dan itu yang membuat berbeda dari PPIA lainnya.”

How would you introduce Detalks to our readers?
Felicia: “It’s a two consecutive day online talk show where we invite Indonesian professional industries and content creators and they will act as mentors who will be able to share their experience and guidance for young generations like us. They just touch upon this year’s theme which is “Step Up”. Jadi kita mengundang our guest speakers to share experiences and act as mentors and share guidance untuk kita-kita.”
What’s the background story of this event?
Will people engage with Detalks or not? Committee kita juga belum banyak, we only had 15. Pas awal kita trial and errors aja, which one works and which one doesn’t. Thankfully, the reactions from the audience were very positive dan lebih dari 200 orang beli tiket kita for last year, which is really surprising because it was really new and we weren’t sure if we hit the right target market. And now we’ve decided to make Vol. 2, and now we have double the amount of our committee members which is pretty exciting.
Since Detalks is a talk show to motivate the youngsters to start moving to success, what are your own tips as a representative from PPIA?

Emilia: “Anak-anak jaman sekarang masih berpikir, “We’re still young so we still can do anything we want”. Tapi sebenarnya it’s time to start thinking about your future because the world’s moving too fast. Moreover with covid, it doesn’t feel like it’s been a year. So my tip is, try to apply for internships. Bisa banget menambah experience buat kalian and who knows what the future holds for you guys.

Felicia: “Because of covid, I feel like we have to appreciate time more, it really is precious. Kita harus mulai bergerak karena waktu juga bergerak and you have to start to do something. My tip is to start exploring what you like and what you don’t like. Find your passion and try to figure out what you should do with it. You know, make something out of it and use your time wisely.
Angie: “Covid gives us reasons to open our eyes. We have so much time at home and we can be really productive. There’s so many things you can do to make money out of it walaupun di rumah aja. You can see there’s a lot of people making content on TikTok atau socmed yang lain and found a potential out of it. If you like something and you see an opportunity out of it or make you develop something new, then you should take it.
Rafa: “I think Detalks realize that the audience masih banyak yang nggak mau terlalu engage with these issues or something serious, they only want the fun. Pas kita buat Detalks, kita sadar, why don’t we make networking fun? Kita harus bisa membuat profession fun. TikTok atau Instagram, those are what people are doing these days and it is a profession, and it’s fun so that’s what people seek these days. We try to transition the professional industry into something fun with Detalks.”
