First Ever Model to Wear a Burkini in Sports Illustrated, Halima Aden

A Muslim Somali-American, born in a Kenyan refugee camp, Halima Aden makes history and dreams come true.

She is featured in Sports Illustrated magazine, a magazine who usually features woman in their swimwear. Many names has been in the magazines such as Rhonda Rousey, Gigi Hadid and many more. But none has ever done it like Halima. Halima is wearing a teal printed hijab with matching kaftan and a ocean blue burkini.

The model told BBC, “Young girls who wear a hijab should have women they look up to in any and every industry. We are now seeing politicians, business woman, television reporters, and other successful hijabi women in visible roles and that is the message we need to be sending.”

Sports Illustrated team decided to do their photoshoot on Watamu Beach on the Kenyan coast with fashion photographer Yu Tsai. This is not the first time Halima go on and breaking boundaries. In 2016 she was the first fully-covered Muslim contestant to compete in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant. In 2018 she was the first model of color to wear hijab on the cover of British Vogue.
