A Literal Distorted Reality: Are You a Schizophrenic?
Rabu, Februari 13, 2019
One of the most daunting and sinister things that can happen to someone’s mind; the nightmare for the many living humans: Schizophrenia.
Schizophrenia, comes from a Greek language root schizo (split) and phrenos (mind), is translated as splitting of mind, Schizophrenia is not talking about split personalities, instead it’s all about the disconnection of reality and a scattered pattern way of thinking. Schizophrenia is a disabling brain disorder that affects the way your brain works and how you think. Schizophrenics can’t always tell reality from fantasy. The symptoms are divided into three categories: positive, negative, and cognitive symptoms.
The positive symptoms means they are positive in the sense that they’re not harming. Positive symptoms are more likely about the exaggeration of the normal behavior, such as delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, disorganized behavior, and catatonic behavior. There’s also a difference between delusions and hallucinations: delusions are false beliefs; those who have this tend to close their ears with the evidence and believing things on their minds the most, whilst hallucinations are about false sensations about things that are not actually there, visually or auditory.
The negative symptoms are the absence of the normal behavior, like lacking in ethics and the inability to experience any emotions. These symptoms could be pictured such as flat affect–a condition where the patients show inappropriate response to certain situations, alogia–when the patients can not respond to questions with long answers, and avolition–where there’s a lack of motivation to finish their goals.
Negative symptoms are somewhat cognitive, meaning that the presumed schizophrenics are dealing with attention span, lack of memories, and the difficulty to organize.
Those who are doubted having Schizophrenia would be passing through three phases before being diagnosed with the disorder. First, the prodromal phase, where they experience the loneliness and tend to spend their time alone, basically they’re withdrawing themselves from the public, it’s very similar to the symptoms of depression. Second, the active phase, the patients show the symptoms that they have, and it could be positive or negative. Third, the residual phase, the patients show the cognitive symptoms. To be diagnosed as Schizophrenic, that person has to have at least two symptoms for at least 6 months.
But what causes Schizophrenia and how do we treat it? The exact cause of schizophrenia is a combination of genetics, environment and altered brain chemistry and structure. Antipsychotics are often used to help schizophrenics, however it also has the side effects such as dependence, tolerance, and withdrawal. Do not ever underestimate those with these disorders, instead help them. If you happened to experience all the things explained above, it’s not too late to seek for help, don’t be scared to let people help you, cause everyone matters and so do you.
