Maria Simorangkir’s New Vibes

18 years old and going strong, this 2018 Indonesian Idol alumni is ready to explore the showbiz industry. Maria Dwi Permata Simorangkir was born and raised in Medan, and ever since little she has been identified by many for having an angelic voice. This winner of Indonesian Idol season 9 beat other constestants with her song “Yang Terbaik”.

So last year you won Indonesian Idol and you were the youngest contestant to ever win. Considering fresh from high school and you immediately stepped into the spotlight, what was the process like?

“At first, I was just betting on my luck. I saw an online registration at Indonesian Idol’s Instagram account and so I did list myself and actually wouldn’t even have pictured myself being in the contest. My family and friends were very supportive, didn’t even expect to come to Jakarta to go through it all to be honest. It was beyond my wildest dream. The fact that I got to so far is still a blessing and I’m forever beyond grateful.”

This year you released a single, “I Don’t Want To”, can you tell us more about the song and what inspires you?
“So, I was inspired by my personal life. It’s about a person who’s in love with their friend, and she or he does not want to let the feelings go.”
Young, energetic, talented are the 3 words that best define you. But if you were to define yourself, what it would be?

“No matter how busy I am, I will always be someone who needs their me time with friends. I love exploring new hangout places with my friends and to chase the sunset. I love witnessing how the sun sets and usually invite my friends over to share the moment. Also, I’m preparing myself for uni, so you can call me a college student.”

How about your fashion essentials?

“It’s random, really. I do most of my off-air at weddings and school events so I adjust my style accordingly. I’d wear a dress to wedding events and casual looks for school or uni events. I like to balance an androgynous look, a balancing look of feminine and masculine.”

What are your next goals?
“Would love to go international. And eventually, sending my parents a pilgrimage trip to Israel.”
