Ben Sihombing has officially made a name for himself once the song “Mine” was launched, a song which he wrote alongside his brother Petra Sihombing. A music fam borns out a music man and Ben was no exception. For the last two years, Ben has been actively promoting his own musical color in “Set Me Free” and “Sama-sama Menunggu”. Ben also got another one coming, releasing a single with beauty vlogger Cindercella called “<3” or “Hati”.
So music runs deep in the fam?
“My dad and my brother did music way longer than me and they’re the type of musicians who like to listen to music for their own satisfaction, hence their music preference is pretty wide. They listen to many genres of music, so I kinda grew up under their influences. They always listen to the new songs and stuff.”
What about yourself –what’s your preference? Same as Petra’s?
“Some of it are close, but some of it aren’t. Well, we can call Petra a true musician since he does piano, guitar, drums, and he sings as well. Unlike my dad and I, we don’t play instruments, I’m more similar to my dad in this case. We believe in ourselves as singer and song writer.”
Hence the many songs which you wrote by yourself. Where did you get your inspirations from?
“Many people asked me where did I get my inspirations from. Many of them assumed that I got the inspiration from the musicians to whom I listen like Ed Sheeran, and they’re probably right. However, what they don’t realize is that the inspirations the musicians got mostly came from their lifetime experience. Not necessarily from the artists they listen to, but through the little things that happened in their lives, from what they usually do when they go out on the weekend, to their daily routines, and many others.”
Now talking about Hati, a collab with your own girl, yes?
“Actually, it never crossed my mind to ever do a collaboration with my girlfriend, cause I’m the type of person who draws a line between dating and working. But during the time we were working for a song together, there was a friend of mine who suggested us to do an official collaboration, so we did it. Thankfully, the responses we were hoping for turned out to be well received, both of us enjoyed the time we worked together a lot more than we thought. It was a pretty thrilling experience to be honest, cause music is my main thing.”
You mentioned about your father and brother giving you a huge influence on your musical taste, but do you sometimes feel a bit burdened having the last name?
“Not really, not really a burden, all of us are pretty chill to each other. But people have a tendency to compare the three of us, I’d like to say to them to not compare us since we are definitely three different persons with our own music. Their unnecessary comments never really bothered me anyway.”
What’s next, Ben?
“Definitely an album. I’ve been singing for three years, but I haven’t released any at all, so I’d like to release an album. New single in early this year and an album following after that.”
