Elon Musk is many things. A billionaire genius, a successful entrepreneur, a famous investor, and also what they say, a real life Tony Stark. But above all, he’s a futurist who’s using his funds and know-how to change life as we know it forever.
Musk is known to be a dreamer with a vision as a co-founder of PayPal and Tesla. But his ultimate goal is to explore space, and he believes that he can help colonize Mars. Here are 7 interesting things you probably don’t know about him:
Being the billionaire that he is, he used to live on a dollar a day. When he was at college, he fed himself for less than $1 a day. He might’ve come from a reasonably fortunate background, but lived from almost nothing when he was studying. He also went door-to-door selling candy to rich people.
Musk was the inspiration for the character Tony Stark. Little did you know that the Avenger character Iron Man is based a little bit on Musk. In fact, parts of the second movie, Iron Man 2, are even filmed at Space X headquarters and Musk even makes a notable cameo appearance.
At 16, Musk got the idea to build his own video arcade at their high school. He and his brother got as far as signing a lease just for their plans to be foiled when the city told them they were too young to get a real estate permit without an adult to sign off.
His mom thought he was deaf once, while in fact he was just daydreaming. In an interview, his mother revealed that when he was a child, Musk used to stare into the distance while his parents were speaking tMuso him. “He goes into his brain, and then you just see he is in another world. … Now I just leave him be because I know he is designing a new rocket or something.”
At 12, he coded his own video game and got $500 for it. Musk wasn’t late in the days of computer coding since a 12-year-old Musk built a “Blastar, ” a science-fiction-inspired space game.
At age 9, he read the entire encyclopedia. Throughout his childhood, books played a crucial role in fueling his ambitions and how much it entertains him. Said Musk, “I was raised by books. Books, and then my parents.”
Musk wishes he didn’t have to take his time to eat. His friend once said in an interview that Musk once told her he spent a lot of time thinking about electric cars. The statement Musk made to her truly reveals the inventor’s dedication to his work: “If there was a way that I could not eat, so I could work more, I would not eat. I wish there was a way to get nutrients without sitting down for a meal.”
